Coney Island Residents Not Buying What Casino Developers Selling
This week, Coney Island locals protested against the proposal by holding a rally in opposition to the opening of a commercial casino resort in their beachfront neighborhood in Brooklyn.
A grassroots group of locals opposed to casinos is called "Coney Islanders Against a Casino." They don't buy the developers' arguments that a resort of this kind will revitalize the coastal town during the summer.
Participants expressed worries about crime, road congestion, and addiction to gaming. Some voiced disagreements with the job and economic benefits that the casino organization is promoting.
"They say after decades of neglect we’re finally in line to get jobs. My question is, why was there neglect over so many decades? I think that was intentional to keep us in our place,” declared Linda Harrison, who is the president of the Haber Houses, a public housing project from the New York City Housing Authority. The Brooklyn Paper first reported Harrison’s remarks.
The Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma's gaming company, Global Gaming Solutions, Saratoga Casino Holdings, Thor Equities, a major player in New York real estate, and Legends Hospitality have formed a partnership to invest $3 billion on Coney Island to construct an integrated resort casino. The project is focused on around five acres that Thor has long held near Surf and Stillwell Avenues.
Social Issues
The casino, dubbed "The Coney," is expected to reinvigorate the neighborhood and bring Coney Island back to its heyday, according to the developers. The developers claim that the construction of the casino would bring about a number of benefits for the community, including the creation of more than 4,000 permanent employment with competitive pay and benefits, tens of millions of dollars in new local tax income annually, and infrastructural upgrades.
However, during the casino opposition forum, opponents said those hyped benefits would come at a societal cost.
"It’s going to destroy families,” said Erica Turner, who cofounded the organization. “I’ve seen gambling almost destroy my family. Everything we do [here] is geared toward families. We want to keep it family-centered.”
Officials from the casinos claim that they also wish to maintain Coney Island as a family-friendly attraction. Sam Gerrity, CEO of Saratoga Casino Holdings, stated in a recent interview with Casino.org that the development group's primary goals are to listen to community feedback and address issues.
Our goal has always been to interact with the community. For us, that's crucial," Gerrity said. "The road is two-way. They are quite helpful in enlightening us about their main worries. We are able to come to shared solutions more often the more we interact.
Measuring the Perception of the Community
The developers of the casino claim that they still get support from the locals by going door-to-door. In neighboring Bensonhurst and Bath Beach, Community Board 11 gave the proposal their backing.
The gathering of Coney Islanders Against a Casino drew a mere couple dozen attendees. Just 621 of the 1,000 signatures needed to oppose the project have been added to an online petition on Change.org. Almost a year has passed since the petition was started.
"We can revitalize Coney Island's economy right now," Gerrity continued. "Our community truly needs some help. The addition of the casino would strengthen the neighborhood by attracting new businesses.
